THE FIGHT AND STRAGGLE IN THE ERADICATION OF HIV/AIDS IN OUR SOCIETY
Aid they say is a dreaded disease that has eaten deep into the fabric of our nation Nigeria, since the first reported case of Hiv infection in Nigeria, there has been a systematic effort to respond to the potential epidemic in view of the large population of the country. There has also been of steady decline in sero-prevalence over the years from 1.8% in 1991, peaking at 5.8% in 2001.5.0% in 2003 and lowering to
4.4% in 2005. in 2008, the national Hiv prevalence rate in Nigeria was 4.6%.
Sero-prevalence surveys in Nigeria have always shown that the population with the most Hiv infection is in the 15-29 years age range. Infection rates among the population segment below 15 years have also grow very rapidly in the last decade. Interrupting the spread of the virus among the population of young people therefore becomes a cardinal focus of the Hiv and Aids programme response. This should complement other programme areas. Notable that of preventing mother –to –child transmission of Hiv. This would also guarantee a healthier population in the future, as well as secure the population of growing people for the task of leadership development and nation building.
Children have been the missing face of the Aids pandemic the this must change for, this the federal government of Nigeria through the Non-governmental organization,(NGOS), National youth service corps (NYSC) and other Hiv/Aids fighter in collaboration with development partners, is proving leadership in a comprehensive response targeting young people in school and out – of – school. The focus has been to provide skills in reproductive health, Hiv/Aids prevention and peer mentioning to reach the above 80,000 young people that pass through the Nysc scheme health communication worker and though in private, public sector with projections of a multiplier effect among other young people, especially those in secondary school.
The fight and straggle in the eradication of the epidemic has been a continuous fight in our country to get zero tolerance, people affected mostly has been the youths, young girls, bus driver woman, and commercial sex workers in the survival of the fittest. In the course of the struggles many has lost their life, girls has become prostituted, school drop outs and their future been terminated destroy and sometime lost their life, woman lost their marriage in the course family destabilize therefore putting their children in pains and become orphans and vulnerable looking for help were it will never come, in the cause freedom fight has used dreamer, Bill boards & posters to create awareness all in the fight of the virus and many Aids fighter has lost their life all in the bitterness of the country and since we are in the business of rebranding Nigeria we are sure believing that our youths parents, commercial sex worker, sectors worker will be rebraned and we will have a free Hiv/Aids society.
Finally a supporter in the fight of eradicating the spread of Hiv/Aids will like to say that being Hiv positive presents major challenges both one’s mind and body need careful attention if you and your loved one’s are to stay health with a few precautions and changes to your lifestyle, however, you will be able to live a relatively normal life. Some Hiv positive people are still living happily, loving and contributing to society even after having been infected more than 10 years previously
As you learn to live with the virus, how fit you feel may vary. Even if you feel well, the virus has not gone away so you need to take precautions all time, knowing Hiv does not kill people directly. It allows other disease to infect the body without resisting by killing the cells that protect the body form disease (Immune system) it is these “secondary infections” that present the most risk. A few simple precautions however will reduce your chances of catching other disease. Avoid getting malaria, always sleep under an insecticide treated bed net, long lasting insecticide treated nets are now available in Nigeria. mouth sores occur, avoid any food that will worse it make sure that nourishing food is eaten to give the body necessary nutrients and to prevent loss of weight.
Lastly there are some food that are required to eat so that it will help build the body and fight other infection like proteins carbohydrates, fats and oils e.t.c. all this are what our finding say will make an Hiv/Aids patient to stay healthy.
IMPORTANCE OF NYSC TO NATION NIGERIA
OBEYING THE CLARION-CALL
Youths obey the clarion call let us lift our Nation high under the sun or in the rain with dedication and selflessness Nigeria is ours, Nigeria we serve. This is a call to serve our father’s land, Nigeria is a country whose colonial history and experience in the immediate post independence era were characterized by ethic
loyalties, mutual group suspicion and distrust, that culminated in the traumatic events of a bloody civil war. As a developing country. Nigeria is further plauged by the problems attendant upon a condition of under development, namely poverty, mass illiteracy, acute shortage of high skilled manpower (coupled with most uneven distribution of the skilled people that are available) woefully inadequate socio-economic infrastructural facilities ie housing, water and sewage facilities, road, health – care service and effective communication system and faced with these almost intractable problems, which were further compounded by the burden of reconstruction after the civil war, the government and people of Nigeria set for the country Fresh goals and objectives aimed at establishing Nigeria as united, Strong and self reliant nation, great and dynamic economy and a land of bright and full opportunities for all citizen and free and democratic society.
The government and people of Nigeria are not aware that sound and patriotic leadership is a per condition for the rapid social and economic development of the country. As a nation, Nigeria has been less fortunate in the kind of leadership that emerge to govern the affairs of the country in the period immediately after independence, whose achievements not withstanding was none the less ill-prepare and generally not properly motivation to tackle the problems of socio-economic under development in the interest of the country as a whole. Looking at the attitudes of the Nysc since 1973 when it was establish by the government, we see the essence of life in orientation camp the activities of the orientation course are designed and improve upon each year to prepare the corps member for their prospective experience during the service years. Thus the physical exercise, games, and mountaineering are to toughen the body and as necessary compliment, the mind is catered for through intellectual activities such as lectures, symposia, initiative test and exposure to challenges. Many lectures feature the geography, history and socio-economic layout of the states above all there are cultural display at the reception for corps members and later on the language study sessions and familiarization tours which give insight into the general ways of life in the state. Then the ever endurance Trek which many always look forward to checking the phrase endurance and trek are related to enduring difficulty over a period of time without complaining the endurance trek is for purpose to check your fitness and to see how far you can endure during difficult times. Many start the endurance trek while few finished the trek why those who do not have the character trait. Endurance have fallen off the way. The essence of this in relation to the service year is to get your mind and body prepared as you commence the one year journey to serve your father land Nigeria. As corps members, you will be confronted with so many challenges, you will navigate through thistles and thorns even hurdles that may seem in surmountable, but your endurance will help you to face this challenge with real vigor, having it in mind that you have a goal to achieve.
Finally the CDS community development service which is selfless effort is part of the pursuance of the mission and vision of the scheme, moreover, changing unity in diversity as will as national Integration. In order to enhance this activity, there are specified group under which this selfless service are rendered to the host community, the CDS group activities also help to ingrain the spirit of team work in the corps members through taking part in the group project of various kind. The Nysc has real foster one love among the Nigeria youth by giving them the opportunity to learn about higher ideals of national achievement, social and cultural improvement and finally to
contribute to the accelerated growth of the national economy.
